Recently, the New York Times published 2 articles outlining the state of climate research and political actions in the years spanning 1979-1989 (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/08/01/magazine/climate-change-losing-earth.html). This is an illuminating and disturbing look at a missed opportunity to offset the impact of human activities in generating greenhouse gases (GHG) and preventing some of the climate-caused disasters we’re now facing.
In the Sept. 7, 2018 San Diego Union Tribune paper, a team of respected scientists wrote of the need to address the climate issue now, at the state climate summit called by Governor Brown (http://enewspaper.sandiegouniontribune.com/infinity/article_share.aspx?guid=8d89aa2b-1719-4c42-a073-e68635089fbc). Short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), like methane, are much more potent GHG but generally disappear within a decade. Targeting SLCPs can produce cooling effects quickly and, thus, are being addressed by the UN’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition.
